Taranaki Hockey continues to align it's Junior hockey with Hockey New Zealand's Small Sticks Programme. All Mini Sticks teams play
6 aside hockey, with the field size changing to reflect the level of hockey experience and the age of the hockey players. Small Sticks is played at both Stratford and New Plymouth turfs.
Taranaki Hockey’s Junior hockey is a school based format for players years 1 to 8. The game formats vary for each year group. Normal HNZ safety rules apply to each game format and the local Taranaki Hockey playing rules to be enforced.
Apart from registering through the schools, registrations are also open to individuals (eg. home schooled children) who wish to play hockey . Please email competitions@taranakihockey.org.nz and provide us information such as name, address, gender, dob, year level and level of experience and we will try and find a team for you.
2026 SEASON
New Plymouth Junior Hockey - NP turf on Hobson Street

Primary: Sat 2nd May
Intermediate: Fri 1st & Mon 4th May
Finish dates
Primary: Sat 12th September
Intermediate: Fri 11th & Mon 14th September
No games played on Fri 29th and Sat 30th May and Mon 1st June (King's Birthday weekend) and during term break Fri 3rd July till Mon 20th July).
Stratford Junior Hockey - Stratford turf on Portia Street
Start dates
Primary: Mon 4th May
Intermediate: Thu 7th May
Finish dates
Primary: Mon 3rd August
Intermediate: Thu 30th July
No games played on Mon 1st June (King's Birthday weekend) and during term break Fri 3rd July till Mon 20th July) and during term break (Mon 6th July till Fri 17th July).
For the Stratford Primary and Intermediate players there will be the option to extend the season and play for another further 5 weeks straight after the regular season finishes. Information will be send out via the schools half way term 2.
